As 1933 dawned, the editorial writers at the Winona Republican-Herald looked forward to a year of tremendous opportunity, an optimism not likely shared by the seven out of 10 Minnesota Iron Range workers who started 1932 with no work and no prospects for jobs.
Across Minnesota, more than 20 percent of wage earners were earning no wages. Farmers were selling hogs for 3 cents a pound, milk for 2 cents a quart. Nearly 140,000 families were classified as needy.
