Senior City of London figures have issued an impassioned plea that the collapse of Carillion and the crisis of confidence in public-sector outsourcing it has caused should not spell the end of collaboration between government and business through the private finance initiative.
Carillion was put into liquidation last week after running out of money to continue operating its vast array of government contracts, spanning road building, school meal provision and prison maintenance.
