Court documents obtained by Fairfax Media show that Mr Hoang was well known to police, who had compiled eight different reports on him relating to cocaine, drug precursors, gaming and racing and organised crime.
One witness, who cannot be named for legal reasons, told police that she had “heard rumours in the community” that Mr Hoang was killed because he could not pay his debts.
Mr Hoang was “nonchalant” about a debt of $67,000 owed to a shopkeeper, said another.
