Today, all Australian breweries and distilleries are being faced with another biannual tax increase in line with CPI inflation, the 84th since the policy was first introduced by Paul Keating in 1983.
However, the increase comes at an increasingly difficult moment for Australia’s brewing sector, with producers of all scales feeling the impact of trading in the current economic climate. Over the past 24 months, at least 47 Australian breweries have either been through voluntary administration or have entered liquidation. In addition to this, iconic breweries such as CUB’s Matilda Bay and Lion’s Malt Shovel have been forced to shut their doors due to surmounting economic pressures.
