Spirit Airlines, the eighth-largest U.S. airline carrier that shook up the budget travel industry, is shutting down its operations after 34 years, leaving passengers scrambling.
“It is with great disappointment that on May 2, 2026, Spirit Airlines started an orderly wind-down of our operations, effective immediately,” the company wrote in a statement on its website.
Spirit said that customers “should not go to the airport” as all flights are canceled and customer service is no longer available.
Customers with Spirit tickets will be issued refunds, according to the site. Travelers can log in here to check their refund status.
