Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher is facing the possibility of being declared bankrupt over unpaid tax.
The Sky Sports pundit appeared in court on Wednesday after His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC), Britain’s tax authority, filed a bankruptcy petition against him.
A bankruptcy petition is an application to a court used to recover funds and is the “last resort” to chase unpaid taxes, according to HMRC.
A spokesperson for Carragher said: “This is a private tax matter that should have been resolved sooner, and the appropriate steps are being taken today to settle it.
“It is understood that the matter will not proceed any further and will be resolved imminently.”
