MIDLAND, MI Between The Dow Chemical Co.’s anticipated takeover of its subsidiary Dow Corning Corp. and 100 unexpected layoffs at XALT Energy in Midland, Wednesday became a game-changer for the economy of the Great Lakes Bay Region.
Both announcements, though unrelated, have a big impact on region, said Mathew Felan, president and CEO of the Great Lakes Bay Regional Alliance.
“XALT is in a tough situation dealing with the type of batteries they make. They are really caught by foreign markets and foreign governments,” he said. “It’s unfortunate to see those job cuts, but with the type of industry they’re in, they are really kind of hamstrung right now by these policies.”
