Growing up in an outback Queensland town where mining and cattle are king means Sarah Parker is familiar with the cycles of boom and bust, and seasons good and poor.
But losing her job as a process operator at a small copper mining project near her hometown of Cloncurry in November was still a shock.
“I got the phone call the afternoon before I was meant to start my roster, the superintendent said ‘yeah, we’ve been let go, so don’t come back in tomorrow’,” she said.
Ms Parker is one of about 400 people out of work because of recent mine closures in north-west Queensland.
