A man who stole a family’s 700-year-old portraits after gambling away his life savings over Chinese New Year was caught with the one-of-a-kind paintings stashed away in his chicken coop.
The man surnamed Huang of Taishan, South China’s Guangdong Province had swiped the paintings from an ancestral hall in his village estimated to be worth more than 1 million yuan ($145,860), Nandu Daily reported on Monday.
Huang had returned to the village for the holiday when he raided the Huang Ancestral Hall of four portraits on Saturday morning, Guanghai police told media.
Witnesses placed Huang at the scene around the time of the theft.
Officers later visited Huang’s home, and found the paintings stashed in his backyard chicken coop.
