Skills minister says government has a “fundamental responsibility to protect students and research”
The skills minister has said that the government is prepared to intervene if a university goes bankrupt, so as to keep research and teaching going while the institution went through liquidation.
Amid ongoing severe pressure on university finances, there are long-running fears that some institutions are close to collapse. Jacqui Smith has now said in a letter to the House of Commons’ Education Committee chair, Helen Hayes, that she acknowledged concerns that a higher education institution “entering compulsory liquidation would result in an immediate closure”.
