By the time he died in 1917, gunner and former South Australian police officer Joseph Prentice Thorpe had served in some of the bloodiest battles of World War I.
But even before he saw action across France, the decorated private had survived one war, safely returning from two tours of South Africa, fighting the Boers.
His service and sacrifices were highlighted on Sunday at a special memorial in Adelaide held annually ahead of Tuesday’s Anzac Day commemorations to remember police officers who died while on military duty.
Born in Adelaide in April, 1881, Private Thorpe enlisted for the Boer War in 1901, serving with both the 6th South Australian Bushmen’s Contingent and the 8th Australian Commonwealth Horse.
