On April 9, 2014, Paul Borrelli, a local man whose bookmaking traces back to Rochester’s mob days, received a call from a friend who owed $1,600 in gambling debt.
“There’s a line from the old movie, The Godfather,” the man told Borrelli, joking about his debt.
“What’s that?” Borrelli said, laughing.
“Tom, could you let me off the hook for old time’s sake?”
The next day Borrelli telephoned the man back.
“This is Tom,” Borrelli said.
“Tom Hagen?” he said, referring to the character in the classic mob film.
“Yeah, Tom. How are you?”
