It took less than an hour for creditors to vote to close the Liberty Bell Bay manganese smelter, a full stop in the industrial operations that had been a landmark in Tasmania’s north-east for more than six decades.
The plant was not only the country’s sole manganese smelter, but employed 204 people in George Town, about 50 kilometres from Launceston.
