This year’s unfavourable weather conditions could bankrupt some potato growers in Latvia, Aiga Kraukle, Chair of the Board of the Union of Potato Growers and Processors, told Latvian Radio on 30 September.
It will take farmers more than a year to recover from this year’s bad situation, but each farmer’s situation will vary depending on the farm’s investments.
No significant increase in potato prices is expected in the shops as Europe had a good potato harvest this year. However, this is a bad sign for potato growers, who have had to spend significantly more this year due to the wet weather. Thus, in markets where farmers sell their own produce, the price of potatoes will still be higher.
