Workers at the troubled Vulcan coal mine in Central Queensland are owed more than $16 million in entitlements, according to a winding up application in the Federal Court.
The mine’s owner, the Brisbane-based Vitrinite group of companies, went into voluntary administration on February 22 this year with debts of more than $400 million.
The mine, about 200 km south-west of Mackay, employed 348 people when it ceased operation, according to the report by administrator Cor Cordis.
A “circular to creditors” released in March said the “majority” of employees were stood down from January when the mine came to an “effective standstill.”
