The US is reeling from its deadliest mass shooting in modern history.
At least 59 were killed and more than 500 wounded when Stephen Paddock opened fire into a crowd watching a country music concert from his hotel room in Las Vegas.
Hundreds of investigators, led by the FBI, are now trying to work out what drove Paddock to commit such an atrocious act.
Information gleaned so far has made the unimaginable horror even more difficult to digest.
Paddock, 64, is said to have been a wealthy, retired account who had no previous criminal record, known affiliation with a terror group or history of mental illness.
His closest relatives have been unable to offer more by way of explanation.
