Governor Janet Mills announced that her Student Loan Debt Relief program has returned more than $140 million to Mainers over the last three years.
The program allows eligible Maine residents to receive an annual refundable tax credit for student loan payments up to $2,500. Supporters say it was designed to attract young workers to Maine and encourage those already here to stay.

According to the administration, almost 30,000 Mainers received the reimbursement last year.

The liquidator’s report cites the company owing Bank of New Zealand $6.6 million. Its directors are longtime Bay of Plenty kiwifruit growers John Cook and David Goodwin, who own the 24 hectare orchard on Stock Road, Flaxmere.
The report notes that both have been co-operative in assisting the liquidators.

It had employed 56 people at one point in 2024, according to its most recent Companies House filings, up from 27 in 2023.
Andrew Cordon and James Everist of Nottingham-based CFS Restructuring LLP, who have been tasked with winding up the company, were appointed as joint liquidators of Bes Care in November.
