Senegal’s fiscal stability and debt sustainability came under severe pressure following the publication of the Court of Auditors’ report on 12 February. The report confirmed the former government underreported fiscal deficits and government debt during the period from 2019 to 2023. It also revealed Senegal has very restricted fiscal space and high financing needs. In 2023, central government debt would have been at 99.7% of GDP instead of 81% of GDP (as published by the IMF WEO in October 2024) and the fiscal deficit would have been at 12.3% of GDP instead of 4.9% of GDP. As a reaction to this situation, the IMF has suspended its active Extended Credit Facility programme (June 2023–June…

Credit cards can be a great option for some purchases, if you have financial discipline. However, if you struggle to repay your credit card debt and are being hit with high interest rates and late fees, you may want to stop using it until you can get your finances in order. We know how hard it can be to ignore the convenience of using credit cards, so we’ve put together this list of reasons why you should avoid credit and why cash is advantageous.

Key Takeaways

  • Credit cards offer valuable perks and benefits, but they can cost you in the long run if you carry a balance every month.
  • People with poor credit scores pay higher interest rates, so using credit cards costs them more.
  • Switching from relying on credit cards to using cash or…

Over 25 million Brits have admitted they’re in debt, with 40% relying on credit cards for everyday spending. The research, carried out by free credit score app CredAbility, found that a further 18% have received bad financial advice, making their situation worse.

The good news is that people can take a few simple steps to regain better control of their finances. Keely Newman, head of vulnerable customers at TSB Bank, told the Express: “On debt awareness week, it’s a good time to check in on your finances and consider how you can make small changes while you build for the long-term and the goal of becoming debt free. Support is out there – from your bank to charities like StepChange – that can help you navigate your finances and…

New research by Stepchange has found that more than one in four (27%) adults in the UK, equivalent to around 15 million people, would be unlikely to speak to a friend, partner or family member about debt problems.

The polling, conducted by Censuswide on behalf of StepChange, found generational and gender divides when it comes to attitudes towards debt problems, with the older the age group the less likely someone is to talk to someone they know about debt problems. Almost one in three (30%) people aged over 55 would be unlikely to, compared to 26% of 18–24-year-olds.

More than one in six (18%) 55+ adults believe avoiding debt problems is always within someone’s personal control, compared to just 9% of 18-24 year…

The government has promised to wipe $16 billion off the country’s collective student loan debt. A one-off payment factored into the 2025 Federal Budget would cut all debt on the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP), formerly known as HECS, by 20 per cent.

That would reduce debt for about three million Australians on June 1. The average HECS-HELP debt fell by $1,200 last year after a retroactive move to reduce the blow of indexation.

Previously it had been tied to inflation and students copped significant increases, in some cases pushing their debt higher despite a year of making required payments.

Debt settlement can offer a lifeline for consumers who are struggling with overwhelming debt.

When you pursue debt settlement — also called debt relief, debt negotiation or debt resolution — you attempt to get creditors to agree to accept a payment that’s less than what you actually owe. One industry study found that consumers who successfully settled accounts reduced their debt load by about half.

That may sound like a no-brainer. But debt settlement isn’t the best solution for everyone. And even if it seems like a good option for your situation, it’s crucial that you…

Households are braced for a fresh round of bill hikes in April – and some may have to dip into savings or perhaps even go further into debt to cover expenses.

If you’re slipping further into the red, support is available, and Debt Awareness Week (March 24 to 30 2025) encourages those with money worries to open up and take steps to get help.

Richard Lane, chief client officer at StepChange Debt Charity, says: “Debt is a normal part of life for many people, whether it be a mortgage, car finance agreement or credit card.

“Borrowing on credit can be a useful to manage chunky expenses and spread the cost of a big purchase. However, debt can be a sensitive topic, and the stigma around it often prevents people from talking openly or…

COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — When an Alta High School student reached out to the Utah Lunch Debt Relief Foundation to donate $2,500 to help relieve students’ school lunch debt, DJ Bracken was in disbelief.

“That was the most incredible thing I’d ever heard,” said Bracken, the nonprofit’s founder and executive director.

High school junior David “Van” Hafner used his savings, combined with funds from the Utah Lunch Debt Relief Foundation, to help pay off Butler Elementary School’s over $6,000 school lunch debt.

Bracken and Hafner presented the school with the check on Friday, March 21, marking the 12th school the foundation has helped make debt-free. Now, Hafner is planning to continue working with the Utah Lunch Debt Relief Foundation to help…

RICHMOND (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The end of March might be the beginning of new problems for people as March Madness has worked down to a basketball Final Four… the beginning of gambling issues. Carolyn Hawley is President of the Virginia Council on Problem Gambling, who’s getting the word out on problem gambling and the hotline to help, says it’s no coincidence March is “Problem Gambling Awareness Month”. She, in addition to the basketball tournament, opportunities to gamble have increased with legalization of casinos, sports wagering, and even playing lottery games — with a new Mega Millions game to come. Hawley says signs gambling may be a problem includes experiencing more financial distress or debt because…
