United Kingdom’s tax authority has declared Hassan Nawaz, son of PML-N President and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif as a tax defaulter in its updated the list of defaulters on its official website on Wednesday. 

According to details, Hassan Nawaz failed to pay £9.4 million in taxes between April 5, 2015, and April 6, 2016. 

The UK tax authority has imposed a £5.2 million penalty on the son of former prime minister. 

Legal experts suggest that despite PML-N president’s son having declared bankrupt a few months ago, authorities may still recover the penalty, as tax fraud fines are not waived under UK law. 

There has been no response from Hassan Nawaz’s legal representatives so far.

Citizens Advice Scotland project to help people with council tax debt

People struggling with council tax arrears will have access to “enhanced advice” through the expansion of a Citizens Advice Scotland project.

Backed by an additional £2.2 million in Scottish government funding, the project provides tailored support to affected households and works with local authorities to support good practice in council tax debt collection.

The project has already been delivered in nine local authority areas, where it has helped to promote dignified and empathetic approach to debt collection and supported more than 1,600 people with advice on council tax issues. This additional funding will allow the project to be extended across the whole country.

According to the latest list published on the UK government’s official website, Hassan Nawaz failed to pay £9.4 million in taxes between April 5, 2015, and April 6, 2016.

British tax authorities have not only disclosed details of his outstanding tax liabilities but have also imposed a £5.2 million fine, which is mentioned on the official website.

In November last year, the London High Court of Justice declared Hassan Nawaz bankrupt after he failed to settle his tax obligations.

Next week the Budget will reveal who is being taxed and who is not. In a fair society, some of the most profitable companies would be paying much more than students. But once again the budget will show that Australia collects much more from student debt repayments than the Petroleum Resource Rent Tax (PRRT).

While this is bad enough, the ATO’s most recent figures in its annual report reveals that this gap has widened: in 2023-24 the ATO collected more than four times more from student debt repayments than the PRRT.
