Former Carlton and Brisbane star Brendan Fevola has been declared bankrupt in the Federal Court.

The Federal Circuit Court made the declaration in Brisbane on Wednesday morning.

Fevola did not appear in court for the declaration.

The court had heard that the former star forward had unpaid debts of $60,000.

The bankruptcy is the latest chapter in Fevola’s controversial career.

He was fined nearly $30,000 for various off-field misdemeanours while at Carlton, which led to him being traded to Brisbane in a high-profile move at the end of 2009.

His problems continued at the Lions, before his contract was terminated in 2011 after he was arrested in Brisbane on charges of public nuisance and obstructing police.

He has since spent time playing in the…

Australian self-made coal baron Nathan Tinkler has gone from being the nation’s youngest billionaire to officially bankrupt in just five years, capping a dramatic fall from grace after he failed to appeal a court order.
Tinkler, a larger-than-life character who spent millions on sporting clubs and horse racing, making enemies along the way, apologised Thursday to creditors and his family, while telling a newspaper that “I can hear the champagne corks popping in the background”.
The 40-year-old started out in the mining industry as an electrician before building up his wealth on a series of canny coal transactions.

He made it to the top of Australia’s young rich list with a personal fortune of $1.13 billion in 2011, equivalent of around the…

Hin Leong’s founder, Lim Oon Kuin, and his two children were declared bankrupt on Dec 19, the electronic government gazette published on Dec 27 showed.

Better known in the oil trading industry as O.K. Lim, the 82-year-old, his daughter Lim Huey Ching, 57, and son Lim Chee Meng, 54, will have their bankruptcy estates managed by trustees Leow Quek Shiong and Seah Roh Lin of BDO Advisory.

The bankruptcy stems from the former Singapore oil tycoon and his two children having agreed in September to pay US$3.5 billion (S$4.76 billion) to the court-appointed liquidators of the company and top creditor HSBC after a 50-day civil trial.

In the judgment reached by both parties, the family will have to pay US$3.5 billion plus interest accrued…

In 1985 Becker became the first unseeded player to win the Wimbledon men’s singles

Three-time Wimbledon tennis champion Boris Becker has been declared bankrupt by a London bankruptcy court.

The 49-year-old owed a firm of private bankers a large sum and the court registrar said there was not enough credible evidence that he could pay.

Mr Becker’s lawyers asked for a final chance to pay with the funds from remortgaging a property in Majorca.

Mr Becker, now a coach and TV pundit for the BBC and other media, was not at the hearing in London.

Registrar Miss Christine Derrett said it was “with regret” that she came to the conclusion that he could not pay.

“I remember watching him play on Centre Court, which probably shows my age,” she…

Controversial former Auburn deputy mayor Salim Mehajer has been declared bankrupt by a Federal Circuit Court judge, ratcheting up the pressure on the property developer as he faces a string of criminal charges.

The liquidator appointed to Mehajer’s failed company, SM Project Developments, served a bankruptcy notice on Mehajer in September last year and kicked off bankruptcy proceedings in November over a $200,000 debt.

A range of other creditors are chasing Mehajer for payments and the total bill exceeds $1 million.

The liquidator’s petition to bankrupt Mehajer was supported by the Australian Taxation Office and Greenacre-based company Prime Marble & Granite, which helped construct what NSW District Court Judge Judith Gibson has
