Utah schools continue to face a growing problem: millions of dollars in unpaid lunch debt — which has inspired grassroots efforts and gotten lawmakers to look for solutions.

One effort is led by DJ Bracken, founder of the Utah Lunch Debt Relief Foundation, a non-profit organization which aims to eliminate school lunch debt across the state.

“Since we started in July, this has been by far our best month,” Bracken said of December’s fundraising success.

PREVIOUS:

Of the $35,000 the foundation has raised this year, $14,000 came in December alone. The funds have been used to pay off lunch debt for 10 schools.

“It really is rare in life when you get a chance to see how many people want to help others,” he said….

Bill Maher confronted Jay Leno, 74, with a “conspiracy theory” that the former Tonight Show host’s spate of accidents in recent years were the result of a gambling addiction gone wrong.

“It’s a conspiracy theory since you’ve had three accidents that you actually have gambling debts and are being beaten up by the mob,” Maher told Leno, who laughed off the suggestion as he appeared on the Club Random podcast.

“I love the idea that the mob would drive to Greenberg, Pennsylvania, wait outside the Hampton Inn on a kind of sleety, rainy day to throw me down a hill,” Leno joked, referring to the most recent accident—which left him with a bruised face and sporting an eyepatch after he says he rolled down a steep hill and hit…

Jay Leno has had a rough couple of years. First, in November 2022, Leno set his face on fire while declogging the fuel line on his 1907 White Steam Car in his garage. While that could happen to anyone, about two months later, he broke his collarbone and two ribs and cracked two kneecaps in a motorcycle accident. These injuries resulted in major reconstructive surgery, including a brand-new ear. Still, he only missed two shows due to injury, which isn’t bad since that’s his primary source of income. Still, he wasn’t through with his physical misfortunes yet. Last month, he fell down a hill and suffered bruising on his newly reconstructed face.

Elon Musk repeats his US may go bankrupt warning with 'debt chart'; says "We either fix this or ..."

Elon Musk has once again issued a warning about the US economy. Replying to a post on social media platform X (earlier Twitter), the world’s richest man stated that the country could face bankruptcy “super fast” if the rising national debt is not addressed. Take a look at the post here

In the post, the user shares a graph to show the US’ outstanding debt and said: “The United States has a severe spending problem. Current national debt is now at $36 trillion and growing. But for the first time in decades, there is a potential solution on the horizon. Odds…

Hamilton business Greenleaf Fresh is being put into voluntary administration, after what it says were “recent financial challenges” affecting the company’s operations.

Greenleaf Fresh is behind Greengrower, a vertical farm operation that received $3.5 million in public funding last year for research.

The grant from the Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) under the Sustainable Food and Fibres Futures programme was to allow the business to focus on ongoing research and development for new crops and varietal development, according to media reports at the time.

The business and its shareholders reportedly put nearly $5.3 million into…

Belgian second-division football club KMSK Deinze, the former club of Indonesia international Marselino Ferdinan and Singapore wonderkid Ilhan Fandi, has been declared bankrupt by a Ghent court, following a series of failed takeovers and financial mismanagement.

The club’s financial troubles began after the departure of Singapore-based investment firm ACA Football Partners. Subsequently, Luxembourg’s ADA Group, led by Doudou Cissé, attempted to rescue the club but failed to meet financial commitments, resulting in missed deadlines, points deductions, and a transfer ban.

As a result, creditors initiated legal action, leading to the court’s declaration of bankruptcy. The court’s statement noted that KMSK…

Global brokerage firm Citi has assigned a ‘Buy’ rating on Vodafone Idea Ltd., the debt-ridden telecom services provider, with a price target of 13 per share. This target for the stock implies a potential upside of 68% from Monday’s closing levels.

Company Value Change %Change

In a clear signal of its continued supportive stance towards the telecom sector, the government has finally approved a waiver for requirement of bank guarantees for spectrum acquired in previous auctions.

According to Citi, this is a major relief for Vodafone Idea, which was unable to furnish the required bank guarantees. This inability had been a major hurdle in the company’s efforts to secure debt funding from banks.

Citi also noted that the development has…

(Reuters) – Air taxi start-up Volocopter GmbH filed for insolvency proceedings on Monday, citing its inability to raise new funds to maintain regular operations.

The Mercedes-Benz and Honeywell-backed company plans to continue business operations during the insolvency proceedings while seeking additional funding.

“Despite recent intensive fundraising efforts, finding a viable solution to maintain regular operations outside of insolvency proceedings has not been possible,” the Bruchsal, Germany-based firm said.

The electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) industry is facing a financial crunch, with companies persistently seeking new investments to support their capital-intensive operations as companies prepare for commercial…

Many Americans are capping off the holidays with new debt balances.

This season, 36% of American consumers took on holiday debt, according to a new survey from LendingTree.

Those who racked up balances this season took on an average of $1,181 in debt, up from $1,028 in 2023. However, that is still down from $1,549 in 2022, LendingTree found.

Less than half — 44% — of the people who took on debt expected to acquire those balances, a sign that this holiday season is still financially challenging for many people, according to Matt Schulz, chief credit analyst at LendingTree.
