In the past two years, at least five Michigan counties have worked with a non-profit to help erase some residents’ medical debt.
The counties partner with the group Undue Medical Debt. They subsidize that group’s work in buying up medical debt at a fraction of the initial cost, forgiving it, and notifying residents that they’ve done so.
Wayne and Oakland counties recently announced they’re already wiped out about $36 million in medical debt for potentially tens of thousands of residents. Ingham, Kalamazoo, and Muskegon counties are also running similar programs with Undue Medical Debt, previously known as RIP Medical Debt.

Insolvencies and restructuring could rise further over the start of 2025 as firms face more increased cost pressures, industry experts have warned.
Restructuring bosses have cautioned that impending cost rises linked to the autumn Budget could particularly weigh on the retail, hospitality and care sectors.
It comes after official figures pointed towards an uptick in insolvencies at the end of this year.

Company insolvencies lifted by 13% in November compared with the previous month, although they were lower year-on-year, according to the Office for National Statistics.

Flying taxi startup Volocopter said today it was filing for insolvency, days after another fellow German company in the field, Lilium, was saved from collapse.
“Despite recent intensive fundraising efforts, finding a viable solution to maintain regular operations outside of insolvency proceedings has not been possible,” Volocopter said in a statement, adding that the filing was made on December 26.
The company, founded in 2011, is now on the hunt for investors, and court-appointed administrator Tobias Wahl said that the aim was “to develop a restructuring concept by the end of February”.
Volocopter had been aiming to enter the market in 2025 with its two-seater “Volocity” electric air taxi model.
