Sports betting is not going that well. When we last checked in with the industry in August, things were a bit of a mess for both the betting public and the companies that took their wagers. Sportsbook operators were for the most part struggling to make a profit in an uber-taxed and regulated business. That was despite their customers, sports bettors, gradually losing a higher percentage of their money. The golden days of juicy, supposedly risk-free bet promotions were ebbing. Other than a select few sportsbooks that had gobbled up market share, who in this relationship was thrilled about how things…

Pax Christi USA is one of more than two dozen national Catholic organizations, including the Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns, Sisters of Mercy of the Americas-Justice Team, NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice, Franciscan Action Network, and the National Advocacy Center of the Sisters of the Good Shepherd, to name only a few, that have signed a new letter to President Biden urging him to take clear steps to ensure needed debt relief for impoverished countries.
The letter asks that the president take action by supporting the issuance of Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which would allow poorer countries to repay debt or to purchase food and/or medicine, or to strengthen their reserves….

The Biden administration announced Friday the approval of $4.28 billion in additional student loan relief for 54,900 borrowers across the country who work in public service.
This relief brings the total loan forgiveness by the administration to approximately $180 billion for nearly 5 million Americans, according to the Education Department.
“Four years ago, the Biden-Harris Administration made a pledge to America’s teachers, service members, nurses, first responders, and other public servants that we would fix the broken Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program, and I’m proud to say that we delivered,” Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said.
Some Democrats on Capitol Hill have been pushing for the administration to forgive…

President Biden signed off on yet another student debt forgiveness package Friday, giving $4.28 billion to nearly 55,000 public service workers.
The Education Department cancelled the debt for student borrowers who have made more than 120 monthly payments as part of its Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program, which incentivizes careers in public service — like teaching and law enforcement.
“From Day One of my Administration, I promised to make sure that higher education is a ticket to the middle class, not a barrier to opportunity,” Biden wrote in a statement.

Big Lots does not expect to complete a planned sale of its business to private equity firm Nexus Capital Management LP, putting the discount retailer that employs more than 27,000 people at risk of liquidation.
The company said it continues to work toward completing an alternative transaction with Nexus or another party, and aims to complete that by early January, it said in a release.
A valuation appraisal of the bankrupt company’s inventory came in lower than expected, which threatened the economics of the sale of the chain to Nexus, Bloomberg reported earlier on Thursday. At the same time, landlords had demanded that Big Lots explain why it hadn’t closed the deal with Nexus, which agreed to buy the company…
