Increasing government revenue and better managing debt can help foster resilience and accelerate growth

Over the past six months the realignment of global priorities and increasingly turbulent external conditions have continued to test sub-Saharan Africa. Yet the region’s economies are proving resilient. As our recent economic outlook for the region shows, economic growth is projected to hold steady at 4.1 percent this year, with a modest pickup to 4.4 next year. Such steadiness reflects years of important reform efforts across key economies.

The region is home to several of the world’s fastest growing economies—Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Rwanda, and Uganda. Yet, resource-dependent and conflict-affected states are struggling to…

With the end of 2025 just weeks away, many adults may find themselves reflecting on the past year and their overall financial health. Unfortunately, the reality is that many still find themselves struggling with the burden of debt, with credit card debt specifically remaining a major concern now. The average American owes thousands of dollars in credit card debt right now and that’s during a time in…

A liquidator has been appointed to Meathamatic, a company building a housing development in Co Meath, after a meeting of creditors in Dublin.

Meathamatic agreed to the sale of 14 of 16 houses in the Ringfort development in Rathmolyon to families in 2021 for around €275,000 each.

The prospective buyers paid deposits of nearly €30,000 to the company and entered into contracts to buy the homes.

However, by 2023, the surge in construction costs had left an estimated gap of around €1 million between the sale prices of the homes and the cost to complete the estate.

The decision to liquidate the company puts deposits paid by prospective buyers for the homes at risk, and reduces their chances of being able to buy…

A Californian gambling addict caught trying to smuggle nearly €300,000 worth of drugs through Dublin Airport has been jailed for four years.

Jacob Napolitano (28) had arrived in Ireland on an Aer Lingus flight from Los Angeles last May when a customs officer became suspicious of his behaviour.

The officer questioned him and then put his bags through an X-ray machine, which revealed a number of suspicious-looking packages.

Multiple vacuum-packed packages containing cannabis were found with a total weight of just over 17 kilos.

Garda Aine McQuinlan told the court that the estimated street value of the drugs was €288,842.

Napolitano, of Acacia Lane, Lunga Hill, California, came forward on signed pleas from the District Court…

BB Energy has won a last-minute court judgment to prevent the government of South Sudan from selling an oil cargo worth at least US$20mn, due to be shipped next week, as it seeks repayment of a US$100mn loan it granted to one of the world’s poorest countries.

London High Court judge Christopher Butcher said in a November 18 hearing that he would grant an urgent injunction preventing the government of South Sudan from delivering or otherwise dealing with a cargo of 600,000 barrels of crude oil due to be lifted from Port Sudan on November 27, pending a further hearing.

BB Energy DMCC, a UAE unit of the London-headquartered commodity trader, claimed it had been promised the oil under a…

The process of removing written-off debt from your credit report is likely a lot more difficult than you’d expect.

As household debt continues to climb and serious delinquencies tick higher, more borrowers are confronting an uncomfortable reality: Some of their accounts are now considered “written off” by their lenders. Because that term sounds final, as if the debt is swept away and forgotten, it can lead borrowers to think that the worst is behind them. After all, the creditor has already

Unpaid meal debt at Loudoun County Public Schools is up by 52% over last year while requests for free and reduced lunches have seen a 180% increase, school administrators told the county supervisors and School Board members last night.

Lunch is provided to every student each school day regardless of the status of their account, Chief Financial Officer Sharon Willougby said. However, weekly notifications are sent to families with a negative balance of $5 or more. A school lunch costs $3.55 for high school and middle school.

Willoughby said several factors could be contributing to the rise, including…

DeKalb County will pay off all outstanding school lunch debt for nearly 2,000 students, CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson announced Monday, calling it part of a broader push to support families struggling with rising costs and the impacts of the federal shutdown.

The announcement came hours after Cochran-Johnson visited Snapfinger Elementary School, where she said she was astonished by the sight of a donated barrel of food in the hallway. It was a sign, she noted, of how communities are coming together to help many families who are fighting to make ends meet.

“Today, it is a great honor to affirm that DeKalb County is committed to our children,” she said, standing alongside several county officials at the Manuel Maloof Building. “We have…
