In the energy industry, it’s known as the solar coaster: The ups and downs in the solar industry that can cause companies to grow quickly and fade just as fast. So far in 2024, customers of more than one big installer have felt those big downhill drops.

The latest solar giant to run into struggles is SunPower Solar, one of CNET’s picks for best national solar companies. The company is now filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and selling most of its assets in an organization-wide wind down, according to a recent statement.

As part of the bankruptcy, Complete Solaria will buy SunPower’s Blue Raven Solar and New Homes subsidiaries, as well as other parts of the SunPower dealer network.

The problem, Lamont said, is that reams of data outlining the struggles of small business may not easily translate to pro-small business policies.

More companies went bust in past year than during financial crisis

More companies in England and Wales went bust in the last year than at the height of the financial crisis, the latest insolvency figures show.

There were 25,551 insolvencies in the 12 months from August 2023 to July 2024, new data from the Insolvency Service released this morning shows.

That’s more than in the year from August 2008 to July 2009, when 25,186 insolvencies were recorded (see data here). That period covered the collapse of Lehman Brothers in September 2008, which was followed by the ‘Great Recession’ of 2009.

Rebecca Dacre, partner at Forvis Mazars, the international audit, tax and advisory firm, says:

“The latest insolvency figures are a strong…

Let’s bet

A fortnight after the Supreme Court finding, McLauchlan spoke to this masthead about the case. Sitting in his South Melbourne apartment, he shook his head in disbelief. Until then, he felt he had done everything right – from the moment he was introduced to Ng at a midweek meeting at Sandown Racecourse on February 8, 2020, by a mutual friend.

“This fellow wanted to bet with…
