UPDATE: Via a statement issued on Monday to the Las Vegas Review-Journal newspaper, MGM Resorts said that Bruno Mars “has no debt with MGM,”  adding: “MGM and Bruno’s partnership is longstanding and rooted in mutual respect. Any speculation otherwise is completely false.”

However, Casino.org‘s own Vital Vegas blogger Scott Roeben points out: “Pay close attention to MGM’s choice of words. If Mars has a contract for $90 million and loses $50 million gambling, he doesn’t technically owe anything. Related:…

New Jersey is wiping out $100 million in medical debt for about 50,000 of its residents, using federal pandemic relief funds and partnering with a nonprofit that buys the debt from hospitals or the secondary market for pennies on the dollar.

Announcing the partnership with Undue Medical Debt, formerly known as RIP Medical Debt, Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy noted Tuesday how this type of debt can accumulate quickly amid “tragic accidents or devastating diagnoses” and go on to follow a person for decades.

“When someone is sick or injured, they should be able to focus on what matters most — getting better — rather than worrying about how they will pay for the life-saving care and services rendered to them,” he said in a statement.

Hospitality company MGM Resorts has denied claims that Bruno Mars is in millions of dollars of arrears with its casino after reports of a “gambling debt” last week.

A source close to the situation told NewsNation that the 38-year-old singer owed the company $50m.

The anonymous person reported that although the singer made $90m a year through his MGM residencies, a large chunk was being used to pay off his debt.

“[He will] only make $1.5m per night after taxes,” the report claimed. [MGM] basically own him,” they alleged, according to the report.

However, MGM has denied the claims,…

Within less than 24 hours last weekend, I received two similar texts about what to do if you’re falling behind and failing to pay your student loan bills.

“Working America: Fed student aid in default? There is a fed government program that may help. Deadline is 9/30.”

The two different phone numbers listed as the sender for the texts seemed dubious, like potential spam. Yet, the message mixed just enough reality into the text to get you thinking, maybe I should click on this link to save money. Best bet: As a practice, I’d advise against clicking on any links in an unexpected text.

Oddly enough, I contacted Working America, an AFL-CIO affiliate, directly via its website to find out what’s up, and I discovered the texts weren’t scams. I…

More companies went bust in past year than during financial crisis

More companies in England and Wales went bust in the last year than at the height of the financial crisis, the latest insolvency figures show.

There were 25,551 insolvencies in the 12 months from August 2023 to July 2024, new data from the Insolvency Service released this morning shows.

That’s more than in the year from August 2008 to July 2009, when 25,186 insolvencies were recorded (see data here). That period covered the collapse of Lehman Brothers in September 2008, which was followed by the ‘Great Recession’ of 2009.

Rebecca Dacre, partner at Forvis Mazars, the international audit, tax and advisory firm, says:

“The latest insolvency figures are a strong…

Bruno Mars has been an artist in residence at the Park MGM in Las Vegas for almost nine years now, having signed on with the casino in 2016 and recently booking 12 upcoming shows throughout 2024. That’s a long time for a performer at Mars’s level of fame to stay booked for a Vegas residency. On the one hand, you could assume that the Mars/MGM partnership has gone on for so long because it is a mutually beneficial and highly profitable relationship.

Orrr… if you’re a dozen lazy media outlets that don’t enjoy performing a modicum of fact-checking, Bruno has remained in servitude to MGM because he has racked up $50 million worth of gambling debt to the casino that keeps him performing there against his will forever!

Spoiler alert: No,…

William Brangham:

For a closer look, we turn to Andy McCullough, He is a senior writer for “The Athletic” and author of “The Last of His Kind: Clayton Kershaw and the Burden of Greatness.”

Andy, thank you so much for being here.

Just for our viewers who are not familiar with who Shohei Ohtani is, this is one of the stellar athletes in baseball, an incredible hitter, keeps getting better, was an amazing pitcher when he’s on the mound. Many believe this guy is the greatest in the game today, also apparently one of the nicest guys too.

So this news gets out about these gambling allegations. How did that news come out and how did that land in the baseball community?

Andy McCullough, Senior Writer, “The Athletic”: Yes, I…

If you live in or near Carteret County, you may be familiar with the sign wars.

The trend started between Dank Burrito and Ioanni’s restaurant in Morehead City and spread throughout the area.

The fun now also supports a good cause in a big way.

What started as a joke between friends turned into a sensation.

One business owner decided to take advantage of the opportunity to help provide money for local schools.

So far, it has raised more than $18,000 for student lunch debt relief.

Signs of a trend taking over Carteret County and even surrounding areas.

It’s called the ‘sign wars.’

Ashley Harrell is one of the owners of Gaffer’s Restaurant and she uploaded her sign to Facebook with a call to action.

So that really kind of struck my heart…
