He said: “We worked so hard to stay afloat during Covid, changing to doing takeaway afternoon teas, getting meals and supplies to frontline workers. It was a huge effort. We were doing thousands of meals-a-day to support people during the pandemic.

“And now, for the government to just turn round and leave us effectively high and dry is really disappointing.

“We had an agreement with HMRC and were two years into a five year repayment plan for the amount owning.

“It’s a large amount and then a few months back they came in and said ‘that deal isn’t valid anymore, we need that amount’.

“It’s almost ‘mafia-like’ behaviour to be honest, I was saying that to someone. I feel absolutely…

Last week, an investigation by The Intercept revealed that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has repeatedly stiffed the Defense Department on a bill for support of a Saudi-led war in Yemen that killed hundreds of thousands of people and sparked a humanitarian catastrophe. For months — up to and since publication — the Pentagon has ducked The Intercept’s requests for comment on the unpaid bill.

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., in a statement to The Intercept, excoriated the kingdom, its leader Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and the Pentagon in response to the findings.

“Yemen’s children will grow up knowing Saudi Arabia’s brutal war that caused so much slaughter and starvation was made possible with American support. Now,…

The National Police Agency will launch its first investigation into online casinos that are run overseas. Gambling on such sites has spread rapidly among younger people in Japan, which has led some of them into debt and illicit part-time jobs.

The NPA will share the results of its investigation with relevant ministries and agencies as a step toward regulating access to such gambling sites and measures tackling addiction.

Gambling is allowed in Japan in certain forms, such as horse racing, but betting online is illegal even if the site is legally operated overseas. However, there is a widespread misconception that gambling…

  • Salih Ozhot applied for a £50,000 Bounce Back Loan to support his business, but ended up using the money for his own personal gain
  • His actions were described by Insolvency Service investigators as “cynical”, “sophisticated” and “pre-planned”
  • Ozhot, who was declared bankrupt in 2021, will have to repay the loan in full

A North London man who admitted cheating taxpayers out of £50,000 by fraudulently applying for a Covid loan has been ordered to pay the money back in full.

Salih Ozhot, 41, was sentenced to two years in prison, suspended for two years, when he appeared at Wood Green Crown Court on Friday 2 February.

The Insolvency Service also successfully applied for a compensation order, meaning Ozhot will have to repay the £50,000 he…

  • “Thousands” of Ocean electric SUVs were delivered before the bankruptcy filing

Electric vehicle startup Fisker on Monday filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection with a court in Delaware, just a year after the start of deliveries of the company’s Ocean debut model.

A company spokesperson said Fisker delivered “thousands” of the crossovers to customers in Europe and North America but was set back by “various market and macroeconomic headwinds.”

In addition to facing a market cooling on EVs, Fisker also suffered challenges in ramping up production due to supply chain issues. The National Highway Traffic Safety…

Letters were being mailed on Monday to about 66,000 patients in New Orleans, notifying them that the debt they collectively owe to Ochsner Health — roughly $59 million in unpaid bills for doctor visits, hospital stays, medical procedures and other services, some of it dating back years — has been erased.

The massive debt forgiveness is the result of a deal that the health system finalized with the city of New Orleans and a nonprofit organization called Undue Medical Debt, which negotiates with hospitals, doctors’ offices and ambulance services to purchase and then erase the outstanding medical bills of those least able to afford it.

The deal comes more than 18 months…

Credit cards under the loop
Keep an eye out for these signs if you’re feeling overwhelmed by your credit card debt this fall.

While credit cards can be useful financial tools when managed responsibly, it’s surprisingly easy for this type of debt to become problematic. After all, the interest rates on credit cards tend to be higher than other borrowing options, so if you’re not paying off what you owe in full each month, your balance can grow out of control quickly. Couple that with the other economic hurdles we’re facing, like inflation pushing up the cost of housing, groceries and other necessities, and it’s easy to understand why

It’s always a concern when you hear about football clubs crippled with debt. We know that better than most as Manchester United fans following 18-years of the Glazers having complete power at the club.

Malcolm Glazer gradually increased his shareholding at Manchester United following his acquisition of John Magnier and J.P. McManus’s 28.7% stake in May 2005, which pushed his own up to around 57%. Most of the capital used by Glazer to purchase United came from loans, the majority of which were secured against the club’s assets, with gigantic interest payments.

Every United fan has their view on what happened and how it happened. Some feel Ferguson had his hand to play in it all, or that he could’ve helped prevent it, but the…
