Dessert manufacturer Sara Lee is being sold after it went into voluntary administration last October.

The company appointed as Sara Lee’s voluntary administrator in 2023, FTI Consulting, has agreed to sell Sara Lee’s Australian and New Zealand businesses to a private company owned by Klark and Brooke Quinn.

The Quinn family has also been involved in the purchase of confectionery maker Darrell Lea out of voluntary administration in 2012 and its subsequent…

After announcing earlier this week that U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris plans to take on corporate price gouging with the first-ever federal ban in the food and grocery industries, the Democratic presidential nominee’s campaign on Friday unveiled details about Harris’ broader economic agenda, making clear to advocates that she is focused on lowering numerous costs facing working households.

Along with a four-year plan to boost housing construction, provide financial help to first-time homebuyers, and rein in predatory corporate landlords, Harris announced plans to lower medical costs and provide financial assistance to new parents and families raising young children.

The proposals, which Harris is expected to officially announce at a…

The new year has started much as 2023 ended with another brewery entering voluntary administration. Wayward Brewing and the Local Drinks Collective formed with Batch Brewing Co in October 2022 have appointed administrators with the intention of restructuring the business and retaining ownership.

Wayward was launched by Peter Philip in 2012, going on to build a brewery and accompanying venue in 2015. They have won a number of awards for their beers over the years before forming the Local Drinks Collective (LDC) with their fellow inner-west brewers. Batch Brewing Co are not involved in the administration process.

Peter told The Crafty Pint the decision had been taken to return Wayward and the LDC to a cash flow positive state, and that…

Rugby Australia is working with the debt-ridden Melbourne Rebels to ensure they field a team in this year’s Super Rugby Pacific competition but has offered no guarantees beyond that.

Melbourne formally entered voluntary administration on Monday night, with the season set to get underway in less than a month.

The national governing body said it remains committed to rugby in Victoria but offered no clues about how that may look.

In a statement,…

Vacuum cleaner retail chain Godfreys has collapsed, with cost of living pressures blamed for fewer sales and contributing to a “challenging economic and operating environment” for the business to remain viable.

Since its establishment in 1931, Godfreys evolved to become one of the world’s biggest vacuum cleaner retailers, and operates 141 stores employing more than 600 people…

Katie Price was declared bankrupt yesterday after the High Court was told she had failed to stick to a plan to repay her debts.

The Daily Mail says the 41-year-old former model and reality TV personality, who once charged thousands of pounds for a brief personal appearance, had been pursued by creditors and the taxman after revealing she has splashed her entire £45 million fortune.

Hawkers have today become the latest brewery to enter voluntary administration in a move that will come as a major surprise to many in the industry. Since launching in 2015, the Reservoir-based business has grown into one of the largest and most highly-regarded operations in the country, with sales of their own brands, including the Rover offshoot, continuing to grow year-on-year.

They have appointed DBA Advisory as administrators, the same business that has worked with Bad Shepherd, Dainton and Wayward Brewing over the past four months. In a media statement, they said the decision was taken “to help facilitate a financial restructuring of the business”.

The statement goes on to say it remains business as usual, with “no impact to…

WeWork Inc. filed for bankruptcy, capping a tumultuous period that saw the once high-flying startup navigate a failed initial public offering, Covid-19 lockdowns, a blank-check merger and slow return-to-office trends.

The company — which at its 2019 peak commanded a $47 billion valuation — listed $19 billion of liabilities and $15 billion of assets in its bankruptcy petition in New Jersey on Monday. The Chapter 11 filing allows WeWork to continue operating while working out creditor repayment terms.

Amid a difficult post-Covid operating environment, two more breweries, Hawkers Beer and Big Shed Brewing, have entered voluntary administration and are pursuing financial restructuring.

Hawkers Beer has appointed DBA Reconstruction & Advisory as administrator to facilitate a financial restructuring of the business. Drewery operations will be continuing as usual and there will be no impact on production and distribution due to the appointment.

Founder and Managing Director Mazen Hajjar told Beer & Brewer that the decision to enter administration was made due to financial losses, restricted market access, increased production costs and legacy tax debt.

“The cost of energy went up 90 per cent, barley went up 22 per…

Elon Musk speaks during the New York Times annual DealBook summit

Elon Musk’s profane attack on advertisers boycotting X, formerly known as Twitter, has baffled experts. If advertisers keep leaving and don’t come back, can X survive?

Short presentational grey line

In April, I sat down with Musk for the first of his many chaotic interviews about his acquisition of X.

He said something that, in hindsight, was rather revealing, but which passed me by at the time.

Talking about advertising, he said: “If Disney feels comfortable advertising children’s movies [on Twitter], and Apple feels comfortable advertising iPhones, those are good indicators that Twitter is a good place to advertise.”

Seven months later, Disney and Apple are no longer advertising on X – and…

Australian fashion label Nique has entered voluntary administration, becoming the latest high-street brand to falter in a tumultuous economic environment.

The 26-year-old label, best known for its minimal black and white designs and earth-tone apparel, on Wednesday appointed Justin Howlett of SMB Advisory as administrator.

Nique has since ceased trading, while Howlett pursues urgent expressions of interest for all, or part, of the business.

“The business fell on hard times during the Covid lockdown period and despite robust restructuring initiatives over recent years, the well-documented difficulties across the retail sector appear to be the key contributing factor to the company’s demise,” Howlett said in a…
