BOYDTON, Va. (AP) There was a time when Black farms prospered.

Just two generations out of slavery, by 1910 Black farmers had amassed more than 16 million acres of land and made up about 14 percent of farmers. The fruit of their labors fed much of America.

Now, they have fewer than 4.7 million acres. Black farms in the U.S. plummeted from 925,000 to fewer than 36,000, according to the U.S. Department of Agricultures latest farm census. And only about one in 100 farmers is Black.

What happened?

They were able to overcome the broken promise of 40 acres and a mule to the newly freed slaves a military order, later rescinded. But over the last century, they faced one obstacle after another because of their race.

Farmers needed loan…

Henry Paulson, former US treasury secretary and Goldman Sachs chairman, is believed to have once said that regulation always lags innovation. It is also true, conversely, that good regulatory frameworks always anticipate changes, or require minimal tweaking as changes occur. Indias bankruptcy regulator, the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI), has been forced to ponder its efficacy and regulatory remit as the process under its watch threatens to go off the rails, gamed by various agents. The IBBI has put two discussion papers out for stakeholder feedbackon strengthening our framework for liquidation, and on issues related to the corporate insolvency resolution process (such as whether the committee of creditors, or CoC, sho…

Many American workers are carrying thousands of dollars in debt, and most say it impacts their financial security.

A Northwestern Mutual study found that U.S. adults who carry debt hold an average of $23,325, excluding mortgages. Seventy-eight percent of respondents also believe this affects their ability to achieve financial confidence.

Because of their debt, 29% of respondents said they delayed making significant purchases; 18% delayed saving for retirement; 14% delayed buying a home; 8% delayed having children and 7% delayed marriage.

The findings come as new research from the Insured Retirement Institute (IRI) says most workers nearing retirement in the next decade or two have inadequate savings and are not saving enough to catch up…

When police executed a search warrant at the Brighton home on April 16, they say, they found steam cleaners, as well as bottles of ammonia and bleach.

Senior Detective Stewart told the court police believed there was a high probability that Mr Newman knew the location of Ms Hamkas remains.

I dont have any direct evidence in so far as that he knows, but there is a high degree of probability, I submit, that his attendance at that house on the days, for the duration, that he does know.

The court heard the pair had been close associates for about a year, and Mr Loughnane used to work with Mr Newmans brother.

In relation to their relationship, I would allege and will be alleging in the brief of evidence that there is a debt owed to Mr Lough…

Creditors of NMC Health have approved its proposed deeds of company arrangement (DOCA) restructuring process, a move that allows 34 companies of the UAEs biggest healthcare provider to exit administration.

NMC secured approval for its restructuring proposal from 95 per cent of its creditors on Wednesday, the company said in a statement.

The companies that will exit the administration in Abu Dhabi will continue to operate the NMC Groups core businesses. NMC’s business has rebounded in the first half of this year as revenue beat expectations despite coronavirus headwinds. Gross revenue for the period for its UAE and Oman businesses reached $611 million, 10 per cent more than the company’s projections.

NMC Healthcare said it will transfe…
