BOYDTON, Va. (AP) There was a time when Black farms prospered.
Just two generations out of slavery, by 1910 Black farmers had amassed more than 16 million acres of land and made up about 14 percent of farmers. The fruit of their labors fed much of America.
Now, they have fewer than 4.7 million acres. Black farms in the U.S. plummeted from 925,000 to fewer than 36,000, according to the U.S. Department of Agricultures latest farm census. And only about one in 100 farmers is Black.
What happened?
They were able to overcome the broken promise of 40 acres and a mule to the newly freed slaves a military order, later rescinded. But over the last century, they faced one obstacle after another because of their race.

Henry Paulson, former US treasury secretary and Goldman Sachs chairman, is believed to have once said that regulation always lags innovation. It is also true, conversely, that good regulatory frameworks always anticipate changes, or require minimal tweaking as changes occur. Indias bankruptcy regulator, the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI), has been forced to ponder its efficacy and regulatory remit as the process under its watch threatens to go off the rails, gamed by various agents. Many American workers are carrying thousands of dollars in debt, and most say it impacts their financial security.
A Northwestern Mutual study found that U.S. adults who carry debt hold an average of $23,325, excluding mortgages. Seventy-eight percent of respondents also believe this affects their ability to achieve financial confidence.
Because of their debt, 29% of respondents said they delayed making significant purchases; 18% delayed saving for retirement; 14% delayed buying a home; 8% delayed having children and 7% delayed marriage.
The findings come as new research from the Insured Retirement Institute (IRI) says most workers nearing retirement in the next decade or two have inadequate savings and are not saving enough to catch up…

When police executed a search warrant at the Brighton home on April 16, they say, they found steam cleaners, as well as bottles of ammonia and bleach.
Senior Detective Stewart told the court police believed there was a high probability that Mr Newman knew the location of Ms Hamkas remains.
I dont have any direct evidence in so far as that he knows, but there is a high degree of probability, I submit, that his attendance at that house on the days, for the duration, that he does know.
The court heard the pair had been close associates for about a year, and Mr Loughnane used to work with Mr Newmans brother.
In relation to their relationship, I would allege and will be alleging in the brief of evidence that there is a debt owed to Mr Lough…

Law360, London (September 1, 2021, 4:43 PM BST) — A provider of self-invested personal pensions has entered into liquidation in a move to help it deal with complaints from customers, the City watchdog has said, after it found that the company won business from unauthorized introducers.
DAC Pensions Ltd. has placed itself into creditors’ voluntary liquidation, the Financial Conduct Authority said on Tuesday, which means that liquidators are now winding up the firm’s personal pension scheme, the Davies & Co SIPP. The watchdog told the company’s clients to “immediately stop paying contributions” to the retirement savings plan.
The FCA said in a supervisory notice published in August that the SIPPs…

The High Court has overturned Personal Insolvency Arrangements (PIAs) that would have allowed a married couple write off a debt of approximately 250,000 owed to a bank.
In a detailed judgement Mr Justice Mark Sanfey upheld EBS DACs objections to the Circuit Court approving PIAs in respect of Niall McKiernan, a garda sergeant, and his wife Karen Fitzpatrick, a secondary school head teacher.
The Judge said the PIAs in this instance were premature, and unfairly prejudicial to the interests of the objecting creditor.
The judge said the applications raised important issues as to whether the PIAs, enable the creditors to recover the debts due to them to the extent that the means of the debtors reasonably permit, or whether, as the objecting c…

Wobbly firms are increasingly finding shelter in insolvency law. But is this just a case of delayed burial rites?
Early adopters of the Insolvency Act 2015 such as construction firm Spencon Kenya Limited, which was placed under administration in 2017, do not look like they are coming back.
Nakumatt Holdings, Midland Energy, ARM Cement and Deacons East Africa, Mumias Sugar, Karuturi Multiple Hauliers and Phoenix Publishers have followed the same path and the list keeps bulging.
Britania Foods, the manufacturer of biscuits, has become the latest firm to be placed under administration after defaulting on loans of more than Sh1.3 billion.
More companies are seeking protection from insolvency law as their operations crumble amid a large de…
