PANDEMIC costs and the high price of cattle have been named as key impacts leading to the placing of prominent live cattle exporters the North Australia Cattle Company, and its southern counterpart, into voluntary administration.

The company, once the live export logistics business of Elders, has accumulated debts owed to trade creditors of approximately $3.6 million.

Western Australia’s Jimmy Trpcevski and Melissa Lau have been appointed as voluntary administrators on behalf of insolvency company Jirsch Sutherland.

A statement from Jirsch Sutherland said it was early days in the process and the administrators were undertaking investigations, assisted by the company’s directors.

In the context of Chinas continued growth story despite COVID-19, we look at how businesses invested in the region can strategize to survive and succeed.

The purpose of restructuring in China should go beyond survival from the health crisis. Enterprises in all sectors and industries in China must plan for the next phase when choosing to restructure their business to adapt to a more competitive market, to be a stronger player in a niche sector, to enter a promising sector more speedily, to reshape the market strategy of the group company, to be in better control of the business, and to keep the corporate structure more nimble and flexible to be more resilient in case of any future setbacks.

The U.S. Supreme Court in 2018 overturned federal prohibitions against sports betting. In the years since, many states have jumped on the gambling bandwagon.

Nearly two dozen states and Washington, D.C., have legalized sports betting, including online and mobile betting. Still, there are risks, unsurprisingly exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

During lockdowns, online betting exploded. Now advocates are voicing concerns about problematic gambling and gambling addiction, which can be triggered by loneliness, stress, anxiety and depression.

Some states have created policies that allow players to “self-exclude” from in-person and online gambling. Self-exclusion programs are voluntary programs where a gambler can request to be blocked …

The ACT Health Minister has called on the federal government to reconsider cutting off Canberra from bulk-billing incentives, as 30,000 members of a key affordable healthcare provider face an uncertain future. However, Royal Australian College of General Practitioners president Karen Price said bulk billing wasn’t the answer and broader reform of the system was needed. The National Health Co-op has entered voluntary administration saying the end of JobKeeper and “recent staff changes” had left an “insurmountable” forecast deficit. Health Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith said it highlighted the difficulty to make a bulk-billing general practice “add up” in the ACT. Dr Price said “Band-Aid” solutions for parts of the system wouldn’t help. “…

The government liquidator dealing with the fallout from the collapse of outsourcing firm Carillion is expected to make a claim for 250m against KPMG, the accounting firm that signed off on the former FTSE100 companys accounts.

Lawyers for the official receiver, part of the governments Insolvency Service, have sent a letter before action to KPMG, warning the accounting and consultancy firm to expect a claim related to Carillions rapid implosion in 2018.

The letter is a precursor to a full-blown lawsuit, likely to involve the Insolvency Service, alleging that KPMG did not examine Carillions accounts properly, failing to spot that it was presenting a much healthier financial picture of itself than the underlying reality.

The claim is expected …
