There have been plenty of rumors regarding federal student loan forgiveness, as well as several different plans that could bring this type of plan to fruition at least for some. For example, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) have called for President Biden to forgive $50,000 in federal student loan debt per borrower through executive authority. In the meantime, the Biden administration once proposed forgiving a lower amount of up to $10,000 in federal student loans per eligible borrower.

Not surprisingly, there are income caps that would limit who can receive this assistance. There’s also an excellent chance that none of this will happen at all.

Fortunately, borrowers with federal loans…

There may be an upside to the COVID-19 pandemic – at least for taxpayers.

The Independent Parliamentary Expenses Authority says it administered parliamentary travel expenses of $42.7 million in 2019/20, down from $59.8 million the previous year.

The authority attributes the change to MPs travelling less during the pandemic.

The figure was revealed in an auditor-general report into the authority’s handling of parliamentary expenses.

Reforms to the parliamentary entitlements system were enacted in 2017/18 – in the wake of the Bronwyn Bishop “choppergate” scandal – and designed to increase clarity for MPs, and transparency and accountability for taxpayers.

The audit found the authority’s work had been “largely effective”, especially in…

Humans have been flying since the Wright Brothers took to the air in 1903. Of course, airlines started later with the first scheduled passenger flights in 1914 (across Tampa Bay, Florida). We take a look here at the 10 oldest. Note that some of the orders and listings could change depending on exact dates (such as incorporation or starting service), so treat this a bit flexibly.

The global pandemic has devastated companies large and small, particularly in sectors such as travel, hospitality, and entertainment, but also in the blue-chip domains of manufacturing, retail, and energy. For many businesses, a sharp decline in revenue led to a liquidity crunch severe enough to threaten debt service and raise the specter of bankruptcy.

Some of the earliest emergency measures adopted by many governments in 2020 were designed to stave off a tsunami of insolvencies. While interim lending, tax breaks, and similar steps will be enough to bridge the gap for some businesses, corporate insolvencies are expected to rise significantly around the world this year. In the U.S., for example, bankruptcies are projected to increase 57…

FLORENCE/NEW YORK, 1 April 2021 Around 1 in 8 countries globally spends more on debt than on social services, according to a UNICEF report released today.

COVID-19 and the Looming Debt Crisis notes that 25 countries globally the majority of them already burdened by poverty and deprivation spent a higher proportion of total government expenditure on debt service in 2019 than they did on education, health and social protection combined. Global efforts are needed to protect social spending, and with it the right of every child to social security, education and health services, says the report.

Children living in countries with high debt burdens and limited resources for social protection, education and health are unlikely to ever break …

A Londonderry grammar school has asked former pupils to help pay an outstanding debt of 821,000 to the Department of Education (DE).

A letter, which has been seen by BBC News NI, was sent to former pupils of Foyle College last month.

The letter said that the school “owes DE 821,000 in relation to our share of the cost of the new school”.

It said that DE had offered to defer repayment of the money, but that could involve terms and conditions that would threate…

A Singaporean high rolling gambler who has been sued by a Queensland casino after his $43 million cheque allegedly bounced has failed in his bid to have the case thrown out of court or put on hold.

Singaporean gambling baron Yew Choy Wong, 57, applied to Brisbane Supreme Court last year to have a lawsuit filed against him by The Star Gold Coast in Broadbeach Island dismissed on the grounds that it had low prospects of success to warrant him defending the claim.

But Justice Thomas Bradley yesterday ruled that Star’s prospects of success in its claim that Dr Wong owed the casino $43,209,853 because he is in breach of the cheque cashing facility agreement were “not fanciful”.

“On the contrary, Star appears to have a good arguable case w…

VIP high roller Dr Wong Yew Choy allegedly dishonoured a blank cheque after a five-day losing streak playing baccarat at The Star Gold Coast.

After losing an international bid to pursue Dr Wong over the debt in Singapore, Star Casino has been granted leave to pursue the billionaire in the Queensland Supreme Court.

The well-known Asian gambler had been lured to the Gold Coast casino as part of a marketing junket in July 2018

The gambling mogul opened his account with a $40 million cheque to buy gaming chips before hitting the baccarat table.

Within three days, the billionaire lost the entire $…

A year back, the government had placed a moratorium on companies filing appeals because of the pandemic and resultant increase in corporate distress. But this moratorium has ended just last week. And experts now predict a flood of such cases coming before the tribunal. Pic: Pixabay

The investigation and resolution of corporate disputes as well as the detection of fraud is the job of a few designated agencies in India. One year after the pandemic arrived and caused unprecedented economic havoc, there is widespread belief that corporate insolvency cases as well as instances of large economic frauds may have multiplied. But the designated agencies tasked with tackling insolvency and frauds the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) and …
