GREENSBORO, N.C. (WECT) – North Carolina Governor Josh Stein was in Greensboro on Wednesday for a roundtable discussion on the state’s Medical Debt Relief Program.
Last month, Stein announced that more than $6.5 billion in medical debt had been erased for more than 2.5 million North Carolinians.
Officials say the program both relieves existing medical debt and prevents the accumulation of more in the future.
“Having this debt can be a real psychological burden,” said Stein during the roundtable. “Some people feel shame for not paying what they think they owe, even though nobody asks to get sick. It should be about trying to make it easier for people to have more opportunities to thrive.”
