MUMBAI: The Mumbai bench of the bankruptcy court is scheduled to hear on Monday insolvency petitions filed against Jet Airways by two of its suppliers, a development that could hurt the efforts of banks to cobble together a deal with investors to revive the grounded airline.
Banks have so far tried to keep Jet out of court-monitored insolvency proceedings, as sought now by the two operational creditors, as they wanted to maximise the money they could recover from the debt-ridden airline. If the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) accepts the pleas of Shaman Wheels and Gaggar Enterprises under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), these financial creditors would also have to become party to the case to recover their money.
We have to…

The leaders of Pathway Church on the outskirts of Wichita, Kan., had no clue that the $22,000 they already had on hand for Easter would have such impact.
The nondenominational suburban congregation of about 3,800 had set out only to help people nearby pay off some medical debt, recalled Larry Wren, Pathways executive pastor. After all, the core membership at Pathways three sites consists of middle-income families with school-age kids, not high-dollar philanthropists.
But then they learned that, like a modern-day loaves-and-fishes story, that smaller amount could wipe out $2.2 million in debt not only for the Wichita area but all available debt for every Kansan facing imminent insolvency because of med…

(Bloomberg) — Japan is seeing its long-held push come to fruition, with a debt-transparency plan among Group of 20 nations in the offing.
All G-20 finance ministers agree on the need for debt transparency, German Finance Minister Olaf Scholz told reporters on the sidelines of the meetings in Fukuoka, Japan. Lender countries, including China, should be ready to accept the rules set out by the Paris Club agreement, he said.
With the worlds No. 2 economy under fire, directly and indirectly, for how its infrastructure projects have impacted lower-income host countries, Japanese officials at the helm of the G-20 presidency stressed the need for a greater transfer of information on such project financing.
Separately, Scholz noted that a U.S.-Chi…

The initiation of insolvency proceedings against Jet Airways by a Dutch court has prompted the government to strengthen Indias cross-border insolvency norms. The insolvency law committee, which monitors the implementation of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) and suggests changes, will meet on June 12 to deliberate upon the amendments to deal with cross-border insolvency, sources said. The aim is to introduce the amendments in the Budget session of Parliament, which begins from June 17.
Last month, the lenders and management of Jet Airways were in a fix over the legal implications of a Dutch court declaring the defunct airline bankrupt following pleas of two foreign lenders. No appeal on behalf of the grounded airline has been filed…

About 100 retirees caught up in a corporate collapse fear they will be left homeless after investing millions of dollars in a complex retirement scheme which offered to pay their rent for life.
Sterling First, the flagship of a sprawling WA group of property management and investment companies behind the scheme, collapsed last month, leaving the retirees facing eviction.
Some of the 101 investors handed over their life savings to Sterling First to secure a home on a lifetime lease of up to 40 years via a subsidiary Sterling New Life, which was promoted by former Test cricketer Mitchell Johnson and media personality Jenny Seaton.

The investment firm at the centre of British Steels collapse is considering buying a troubled steelworks in Poland, according to people briefed on the matter.
Greybull Capital, which was criticised after the UKs second-largest producer of the metal fell into insolvency under its ownership, has been in talks over a potential acquisition of the ISD Huta Czstochowa mill.
British Steel entered compulsory liquidation in late May after its request for a second emergency loan from the government was refused, jeopardising some 5,000 jobs, largely at the giant Scunthorpe plant in north Lincolnshire.
It is now under the control of the official receiver, a civil servant who is overseeing day-to-day operations as a buyer is sought.
