The Star Gold Coast casino in Queensland, Australia is suing Singaporean high roller Wong Yew Choy for AUD $43 million (USD $30 million) in gambling debts he racked up during a five-day stay at the resort.

Choy left the country and canceled a check he wrote to pay what he owed to the casino. The casino says he spent five days playing baccarat and racked up the impressive bill before leaving.

The casino launched the suit in the Singapore High Court in an attempt to recover their money.

We are pursuing the debt vigorously, a casino spokesperson said to the Australia Broadcasting Company.

The Star is disappointed the situation involving Wong Yew Choy has forced us to escalate the matter to the Singapore High Court.

The Revolution Church in Annapolis, Maryland, has made it their mission to change the way people think about religion and prayer. They operate as a mobile church, setting up and breaking down their worship areas in schools instead of paying for a permanent buildingand when they raise money, they do it to make the world a better place.

Their most recent example of that giving mentality has taken the world by storm, as a quick donation to a nearby non-profit has changed the lives of 900 families statewide. The church donated $15,000 to the medical debt relief organization RIP Medical Debt, who use donations to buy and forgive medical debt and rescue families from the financial instability left by the U.S. healthcare system.

Customers betting on the Grand National this weekend are set to spend some 16m on credit card fees alone, according to research revealing that bad bets made on plastic could cost gamblers dearly.

Punters are set to bet 250m over Aintree weekend, according to bookmaker Ladbrokes. Up to one-fifth of that amount is likely to be paid on credit cards, which incur far higher fees for bets than other transactions.

Data from credit company TotallyMoney suggests UK customers are set to pay some 15.7m in charges over the weekend, on bets that are counted as cash advances by issuers and attract high interest rates and withdrawal fees.

Data from Defaqto puts the average cash transaction fee at 3.19 per cent and claims the average interest r…

I wonder if I could ask you to change my diaper?

The senior citizen home staff member to whom that plaintive request was addressed did not reply. He lowered his eyes. The elderly resident who had approached him sighed and withdrew. He might have insisted, but thought better of it. When the home, located in Oiso, Kanagawa Prefecture, declared bankruptcy last December, hed feared the worst. It would close down; hed be on the street with nowhere to go. Relieved to be spared that fate when another operator took over the facility, he resigned himself to a decline in service. Staff had to be cut, money saved, individual attention curtailed.

Bankruptcy besets the care industry, reports Shukan Gendai (April 13). Beware, it warns cur…

Casinos can rake in a lot of profit from high-stakes gamblers. In Australia, many of the casinos benefit greatly from high rollers. These whales travel from various countries in Asia to gamble their millions at the high-stakes blackjack and baccarat tables.

No casino executive wants to make enemies out of a high roller. But sometimes, such a business decision is necessary. Such is the case for The Star Entertainment Group, operator of The Star Gold Coast in Broadbeach, Queensland. It was Queenslands first casino when it opened in 1988, and in 2006 upgraded with a $53 …

Citizens Advice has reported a sharp rise in people seeking help with bailiff-related issues as vulnerable consumers are targeted by increasingly aggressive debt collection methods.

The number of reported problems with bailiffs exceeded 103,000 in the 12 months to March 31 this year a 16 per cent increase on the previous year which Citizens Advice said was driven by a rise in bailiffs not following the rules around rights of entry.

Nearly one in six of the incidents involved bailiffs threatening to break in, or unlawfully doing so, the charity said, a rise of 13 per cent on the previous year.

Other issues the charity said it regularly encountered included bailiffs charging excessive fees and refusing to set up affordable repay…

(Bloomberg) — A series of bankruptcy filings by major private-sector bond issuers in Chinas third-wealthiest province is shining a spotlight on aggressive efforts by local governments to manage unsustainable debt loads.

Four debtors have entered bankruptcy procedures since the start of November in Dongying, a city of 2 million in the eastern province of Shandong that once thrived with a booming tire-making industry. While China sees thousands of bankruptcies each year, instances of court-led restructuring of publicly issued bonds have been rare. Authorities in other cases have encouraged workouts with creditors, raising questions about the Dongying examples.

Shandong SNTON Group Co., an iron-wire maker, entered bankruptcy last month.China…
