A council has launched a consultation on a new ‘Fair Debt Policy’.
Lewes District Council wants to set out how residents struggling with council debts are treated.
The policy aims to balance the council’s legal duty to collect outstanding debts such as council tax and rent with providing effective support to those facing genuine financial hardship.
The policy formalises a step-by-step approach, which prioritises early intervention, clear communication and appropriate payment arrangements.
It also commits to directing residents to independent debt advice services to help them manage their broader financial situation.
