With a growing number of individuals impacted by economic challenges, the gambling industry has managed to position itself as a seemingly viable solution for those eager to stretch their financial resources. However, the reality is that gambling can deepen financial woes, leading to a concerning cycle of debt and dependency.

According to JustMoney’s inaugural large-scale survey, Money & Me, an alarming 3% of respondents opt for online gambling, even when faced with other popular options for cutting costs. This trend is particularly pronounced among those earning less than R5 000…

Some student-loan borrowers in public service might lose access to debt relief.

On Thursday, President Donald Trump’s Department of Education announced that it had finalized its rule to limit the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, which forgives student debt for government and nonprofit workers after 10 years of qualifying payments.

Following an executive order in March that called on the Department of Education to redefine “public service” to align with the administration’s political views, the department held negotiations with stakeholders to craft the final rule. It will go into effect on July 1, 2026.

“Taxpayer funds should never directly or indirectly subsidize illegal activity,” Under Secretary of…

U.S. consumers owe a record $1.66 trillion in auto loan debt, according to the Consumer Federation of America, making it the largest category of consumer debt after mortgages. Nearly one in five (19.3%) borrowers have monthly car payments of at least $1,000, quadruple the number in 2019.

Auto lending is in turmoil, with delinquencies and defaults rising across income levels and credit tiers. Some 2.2 million cars have been repossessed so far this year — the highest number since the Great Recession.

Many borrowers are hoping the back-to-back rate cuts instituted by the Federal Reserve in September and October will create an inviting atmosphere for refinancing. When the Fed lowers its benchmark federal funds rate, interest rates on auto…

Marie Thompson anonymously demanded £3,500 from a man arrested on suspicion of possessing indecent images of children

A former police officer has been jailed after she pretended to be a paedophile hunter and tried to blackmail a suspect in a bid to cover her gambling debts.

PC Marie Thompson, 29, had used a fake email address to demand £3,500 from the man arrested on suspicion of possessing indecent images of children, and then falsely told him she had been unable to find the perpetrator when he reported it to her.

Thompson, who worked for South Yorkshire Police, pleaded guilty to blackmail and perverting the course of justice at Leeds Crown Court.

She was sentenced to 40 months in prison on Thursday.

The court heard…

More fundamentally, we’re concerned that the relief scheme is just one part of what’s needed to tackle the problem of people simply not being able to afford their energy bills. Alongside much-needed debt write-off, we also need to see a driving up of debt collection standards, as well as an appropriate form of social tariff for low-income households to prevent debt from building up in the same way in the future. Without these, the debt relief scheme alone is like relying on a sticking plaster to heal a broken bone.

We’ll be looking in more detail at utilities arrears and affordability in our new policy research, just getting under way. By examining the evidence and experiences of our clients across energy, water and…
