Up to £500 million of energy bill debt is to be paid off through bill increases spread across millions of UK households, the energy regulator has said.

UK households are set to face a £5 increase in their annual energy costs to help cover the costs of energy debt that will be written off because it has never been paid.

The increase will take place for the 2027/28 year to help suppliers recover unpaid bills linked to recent surges in energy costs.

Ofgem said this rise could be lower depending on how the scheme is taken up and expects this will be somewhat offset by the measures reducing how much customers pay towards debt-related costs such as through debt collection.

Singapore-based bakery chain Twelve Cupcakes has officially ceased operations after being placed under provisional liquidation on 29 October 2025.

In a statement on its website, the company said its last day of operations was on the same date. “We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused and would like to express our heartfelt thanks for your kind support and partnership over the years,” it said.

The brand, founded in 2011, had been a popular player in Singapore’s dessert scene, known for its variety of cupcakes and baked goods.

Ofgem has announced a new plan to tackle the growing crisis of energy debt through a new Debt Relief Scheme (DRS). The regulator has confirmed the first phase of the scheme will write off up to £500 million of historic debt built up during the energy crisis, with total energy debt across the UK now reaching £4.4 billion.
