An Alberta legal battle over whether creditors take priority over the cleanup of old oil wells has landed at the Supreme Court of Canada with seven justices now tasked with a decision that could have implications for industry and the environment across the country.

The nation’s highest court heard the contentious case on Thursday, centred on the failure of Redwater Energy, a junior oil and gas company that slipped into receivership in 2015 in the wake of the oil price collapse.

Redwater’s receiver wanted to sell the company’s few good wells to pay off the company’s debts, but the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) said such proceeds should help pay to clean up after Redwater’s inactive wells as required by p…

GYMPIE-COOLOOLA has taken out the crown for highest insolvency rate in the Wide Bay Burnett, and the 21st highest in the state out of 83.

New data reveals the Gympie-Cooloola per capita rate is at least eight points above its neighbours.

The Australian Financial Security Authority’s latest regional personal insolvency statistics reveal the region’s rate per 100,000 people (aged 18+) is 64.1, topping Maryborough (55.8), Hervey Bay (51.1), Bundaberg (47.9) and Burnett (34.2).

There were 25 new debtors in Gympie-Cooloola in the December 2017 financial quarter, the same as there was in September 2017, and a touch above the average since December 2013.

Griffith University’s Business School’s Dr Tracey West said there were a number of factors…

The United Kingdom branch of Christ Embassy, owned by popular Nigerian televangelist, Chris Oyakhilome, is broke and has been declared insolvent by the Charity Commission, the agency that regulates charity organisations in the country.
