A call for action on consumer energy debt forms part of a series of recommendations in the first part of the Energy Security and Net Zero select committee’s report into the cost of energy.

The report follows concern about consumers seeking support for energy billing, and the committee said that despite the rollout of smart meters, there were still issues around coverage, and Ofgem should have the back billing period to six months for those on a smart meter.

In addition, the committee’s report found there was record consumer energy debt being carried over onto all bills, standing charges were a “regressive tax on energy access” and the Energy Ombudsman is “toothless”.

The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), Principal Bench in New Delhi, has ordered the liquidation of Multicity Hospitalities LLP after the Committee of Creditors (CoC) voted to end the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP).

The order was passed on an application filed by the Resolution Professional (RP), Mr. Shailesh Chandra Ojha, following the CoC’s decision. The CIRP against Multicity Hospitalities LLP was initiated in December 2024 on a petition by its operational creditor, Indo Spirits. Kathy Gibson reports – Online gambling, a very topical and sensitive subject at the moment, is having a negative impact on consumers.

A new study by Experian and Vault22, using reliable and representative data, concludes the gambling is a challenge for South African consumers, and is one of the factors causing financial distress.

“The market is under severe destress as it is,” says Jaco van Jaarsveldt, chief strategy and innovation officer at Experian Africa. “We see that the rate of distress is higher for gamblers than for others.”

However, all segments of the market are equally impacted, but the study clearly isolates that it is the younger portion of the market that spends a larger portion of their monthly income on…

A federal judge in Texas has ruled that Phil McGraw, better-known as Dr. Phil, cannot file for bankruptcy under Chapter 11, a setback for the longtime talk-show host.

Instead, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Scott Everett says McGraw must proceed under Chapter 7 liquidation for his media company Merit Street Media, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Deadline reports that Everett criticized McGraw for “not being forthright” in regard to his business dealings and in the trial. Everett ruled the assets of Merit Street Media must be sold off to pay for McGraw’s debts.

“Candor to the court is critical,” Everett said in the hearing, according to Deadline. The judge said “crucial” communications had been erased and McGraw’s company was…
