One of the big talking points of the last budget was inheritance tax – and rumours abound of further tweaks at next month’s set piece by the chancellor.

So what are the current rules?

First up, for those who don’t know, inheritance tax is a tax on someone’s “estate” when they die – ie, a tax on any money, possessions or property left behind.

It’s often called “the most hated tax” in the UK – but only around 4% of estates are actually affected by it, meaning most of us will never end up paying it at all.

When do you have to pay inheritance tax?

Inheritance tax is due when you leave an estate valued above a certain threshold to your loved ones when you die.

There is no tax if your estate’s value is below…

New York, NY, Oct. 28, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — As part of its marketplace monitoring program, BBB National Programs’ National Advertising Division recommended that National Debt Relief, LLC (NDR) modify or discontinue certain claims regarding its debt settlement services.

NDR is a debt settlement company that offers services to heavily indebted consumers.

Express and Implied Claims

The National Advertising Division (NAD) inquiry focused on claims made through NDR’s website and commercials, such as “Get out of debt faster than you think – Get back to financial stability and living your life within 24–48 months.” NAD also examined whether implied messages were conveyed that that consumers can expect to become debt-free…

Jobs at risk

Once hailed as one of the UK’s brightest legal tech unicorns, Robin AI has reportedly been put up for sale after failing to close a $50 million (£38 million) funding round.

According to reports from City A.M. and Artificial Lawyer, the London-based start-up, which counts Revolut co-founder Nik Storonsky and Monzo’s Tom Blomfield among its backers, has apparently listed itself on an insolvency marketplace as it explores “options for its future”.

The move comes just days after the company, which has around 170 staff, reportedly began laying off employees across its London and New York offices. Around a third of staff are thought to be affected.

A Cromwell organic Thai restaurant business, connected to a failed North Otago organic vegetable operation, has been placed in liquidation.

Brenton Hunt, of Insolvency Matters, was appointed liquidator of Organic Thai2Go Ltd earlier this month after the company was placed in liquidation by special resolution of shareholders.

In his first report, Mr Hunt said the company ceased trading on September 21, three years after it was incorporated.

The reasons given for the insolvency included the main supplier of vegetables being placed in liquidation and steadily declining revenue.

In June-July, staff members went on annual leave and working cashflow became constrained, as the firm continued to pay operating costs while not open.

Staff…

Patterns of compulsive gambling exhibited by a former pro in NBA case serve as a cautionary tale, problem gambling experts say.

Of the three NBA figures named in last week’s historic indictment in Brooklyn, Damon Jones raised an eyebrow for his rapport with LeBron James.

Jones, a former teammate of the NBA’s career leader in points, allegedly disseminated non-public inside information on an injured player to a betting syndicate in February 2023. While the Lakers’ forward is not named in the indictment, the unnamed player fits the profile of James based on the fact pattern enumerated in court filings. Hours after Jones’ arrest on 23 October, a federal prosecutor urged a Nevada judge to impose restrictive conditions with…

The Bank of North Dakota is developing a disaster relief program to help agricultural producers in the state survive the current crisis in the industry.

The program will work with local banks and credit unions across the state to help ag producers refinance their debt, state officials said during a North Dakota Industrial Commission meeting Monday.

“We’re looking at a very sizable ag disaster program given what’s going on with interest rates still high, soybean market, low commodity prices, high input costs from the compound of inflation,” said Don Morgan, CEO of the Bank of North Dakota. “We’re hearing from our banks that agriculture producers are under a lot of stress.”

The goal is to…
