MILAN (AFP) – Famed Italian hatmaker Borsalino, the company behind Humphrey Bogart’s fedora in Casablanca and Harrison Ford’s lucky headgear in the Indiana Jones movies, was declared bankrupt on Monday, a trade union said.
A court in Alessandria in northern Italy threw out a rescue plan for the legendary company and put it into administration, Mr Elio Bricola from the UIL labour union said.
He added that while “it is likely industrial activity will continue” for now, “employees are angry and worried about their future”.
Michael Jackson loved Borsalino hats, music star Pharrell Williams is a contemporary fan and David Bowie opted for one of its black fedoras for what was to prove his final photo shoot.

PEOPLE are encouraged to reach out for help if they are struggling over the holiday period.
Christmas is often a time of celebration, but for some it can be one of the most stressful times of year.
Lifeline Central West crisis support manager Stephanie Robinson said people can struggle emotionally, mentally and financially.
“You find that this time of year people do feel many different pressures,” she said.
One of the big factors that comes into play is feelings of loneliness and isolation, particularly if they have lost a loved one during the year.
“If that is something that is missing from your life, that can be exacerbated at Christmas time,” Ms Robinson said.
She said if people are aware someone they know is in that situation, it co…

MILAN (Reuters) One of the worlds most famous hat makers, Borsalino, whose stylish fedoras and straw panamas are popular with movie stars and celebrities, faces liquidation after a rescue plan was rejected by an Italian court on Monday.
A judge in the northern town of Alessandria, where the luxury hat maker was founded 160 years ago, refused a request for court protection from creditors, who are owed some 18 million euros ($21 million), a local trade union leader told Reuters.
Its dramatic if a solution is not found. Borsalino is part of Italian history, and its a big name abroad too, Franco Armosino said.

Slot machines, also known as poker machines or “pokies”, are common in Australian pubs
They are the machines that anti-gambling campaigners in Australia say have the addictive “force of cocaine” that are fuelling an avalanche of debt, divorce and misery.
Gambling losses in Australia are at a record high after punters frittered away almost A$24bn (£14bn; $18bn) in a year, according to data compiled by the Queensland state government this month. More than half was lost on poker or slot machines at p…

People with outstanding university student debt can expect to pay their loans back sooner, as part of a shake up of the higher education sector that was revealed in todays Mid year Economic and Fiscal Outlook (MYEFO).
(MYEFO is basically a mini-budget that outlines the governments spending priorities and gives us a snapshot of where the economy is heading.)
At the moment, if you earn less than $55,874 you dont have to start repaying any HELP or ABSTUDY loans. Under the MYEFO changes, that repayment threshold will be lowered to $45,000.
But itll be phased in – so if you earn $45,000, youll only have to pay back one percent of your loan each year. That increases to a maximum of 10 per cent when you hit an income of $131,000 a year.
Theres a…

A smattering of retail chains closed their doors in another tough year for the industry in 2017, but the demise of Sears Canada seemed to resonate most with Canadians, many of whom grew up devouring its annual holiday wish book and shopping at the department store.
The high-profile closure and ensuing controversies helped make Sears Canada’s demise the 2017 Business News Story of the Year. It received 47 per cent of the votes from journalists in an annual poll of the country’s newsrooms conducted by The Canadian Press.
Small business tax changes received 16 per cent of the votes from a field of nine candidates, while trade talks and marijuana companies tied for third place at 14 per cent each.
A list of The Canadia…

Arguments over the income level when repayments start have a while to run yet.
The federal government’s 2017 Budget included a proposal to lower the income level at which university students have to start paying off their HELP debt to $42,000. That was a controversial idea, in part because $42,000 is only 20% above the minimum wage.
In an event, there wasn’t enough support for the idea in the Senate, where the current government doesn’t hold a majority. So now we’ve seen a tweak of the concept introduced as part of the mid-year economic and fiscal outlook (MYEFO). That will see the proposed threshold rise ever-so-slightly to $45,000 from 1 July 2018.
If you’re earning $4…
