Rob Marshall felt a shimmy in his Cadillac as he and his wife, Maria, tooled north on the Garden State Parkway, returning one night from a jaunt to Harrahs in Atlantic City.
Ten miles short of their Toms River home, Marshall slid the Caddy into the Oyster Creek picnic area, a wooded bulge between the north- and southbound lanes near the Barnegat tolls.
It was 12:30 a.m. on Sept. 7, 1984.
The Marshalls three sons were back at school that week the youngest in junior high, the two oldest in college. As they periodically did, the blackjack junkies finished their parenting that evening, then dressed for dinner and dashed 40 miles down the parkway to Harrahs for an 8:30 reservation.

Facing devastation difficult to overstate, Hurricane Irma-battered Barbuda lost more than 90 percent of its structures in a record-breaking storm that will require an estimated $150 million in reconstruction and recovery.
It also has to repay a $3 million debt to the International Monetary Fund, whose special representative to the United Nations Christopher Lane resisted the idea of a moratorium on Friday.
Our general view is that wed rather put new money in than to have moratoria, Lane said. We borrow money from our members who lend. So wed have to get agreement from the lending parties.

The government is considering two options. First, amend the bankruptcy law so that homebuyers do not lose out to banks and financial institutions when a defaulting builders properties are liquidated and debts settled. More than 31,000 homebuyers have been affected by insolvency proceedings against some projects of Jaypee Infratech and Amrapali. Their vulnerability stems from the fact that they figure very low in the creditors order for payment of du…

The government which is planning to sell a stake in its state-run carrier Air India, is considering options such as keeping out at least a part of its $8 billion of debt to help lure investors, the nation’s civil aviation minister said.
Air India’s assets such as real estate could also be spun off into a separate company, Ashok Gajapathi Raju said in an interview in New Delhi on Friday.
A call will be taken by a group of ministers headed by finance minister Arun Jaitley, and the government is open to all options, including allowing foreign investment in the carrier, he said.
“Its books are bad, you can’t leave it like that,” Raju said in his office.
“Suppose a portion of its debt is removed, non-aviation-related a…

Across the country, medical examiners offices are facing a shortage of forensic pathologists. These are the people performing autopsies to determine the cause of a death. And there arent enough of them, at a time when caseloads are rising, in part due to the opioid epidemic.
The Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner came up with one solution to this shortage one they believe has not been tried before anywhere else. Theyre going to help medical examiners pay off their student loans. The average forensic pathologist graduates with close to $200,000 in loan debt.

NEW DELHI: Around 2,300 home buyers of Jaypee Infratechs Wish Town project in Noida moved the Supreme Court on Friday, requesting it to ensure the builder deposited the money needed to complete the project with the court or in an escrow account before lifting a stay on insolvency proceedings at the company. They also want the company to pay them compensation for the delay caused so far with an 18% interest.
The plea, filed by a group of nine home buyers associations, comes after IDBI Bank moved the apex court on Thursday for lifting the stay.
The home buyers want the interest of flat buyers to be protected by the court. According to their application, filed through law firm Trilegal, the insolvency code does not provide for a suitabl…

State Bank chairman Arundhati Bhattacharya today urged small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to focus on raising funds through equity instead of debt to drive their businesses in a healthier manner.
She said SMEs’ relying more on debt for their growth capital in the initial stage of their business put pressure on their balance sheets.
“One of the major problems facing SMEs in our country is lack of equity. Equity capital is a much-neglected area in the SME sector,” Bhattacharya told an SME summit and asked them to learn from technology players which have sourced large amount of equity to ramp up their business and market share.
Quoting the examples of e-commerce companions like the Flipkart and Amazon, she said these firms have done…

Welcome to Barf Bag, a daily politics roundup to help you sort through the chaotic Trumpian news cycle.
Its been eight sordid months and I still wince when I hear the words President Trump.
Heres all the shit we couldnt cover today:
- In the wake of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, the House has a passed a measure expanding emergency disaster relief and increasing the short-term debt limit by 316-90. All of the no votes, of course, came from Republicans. The Senate passed the measure on Thursday and Trump has voiced support for it, so it looks like Congress will avoid what could have been a government shutdown over the issue in October. But fret not, things will probably get nasty in the next round of budget negotiations in December. [The New Yor…
