The Australian Taxation Office is ramping up its pursuit of Jon Adgemis, asking a court to allow it to take the place of Monaco-based rag trader Richard Gazal in his bankruptcy action against the beleaguered publican.

The ATO applied to the Federal Court on Thursday. Gazal is one of a number of creditors who have been pursuing Adgemis for more than a year.

Police in central Vietnam have rescued two Chinese men who were kidnapped and beaten by compatriots after piling up massive debts at a luxury casino.

Authorities said Wang Xiaoci and Li Yao Zong borrowed hundreds of thousands of yuan to gamble at the Hoiana Casino in Quang Nam Province earlier this month. When they could not repay, a group of men forced them to sign debt papers, assaulted them and threatened to kill them unless their families transferred money.
