A legislative working group created to explore student debt relief in Connecticut took an unexpected turn last week when one of its co-chairs, Rep. Eleni Kavros DeGraw (D-Avon), suggested that residents without college degrees are a drag on society. 

The Meeting 

The Relief for Connecticut Borrowers Working Group, co-chaired by Kavros DeGraw and Rep. Corey Paris (D-Stamford), convened August 29 to bring together lawmakers, higher-education officials, and advocates. Its stated purpose:  to develop policy recommendations to help student loan borrowers.

A HUSBAND gambled away a staggering $1 million over the space of nine to ten years, which left him and his wife desperate for a solution.

Debra, 69, from Sacramento, California, called into The Ramsey Show for help, but the host was left scratching his head as he asked how Debra went so long without doing something.

It turned out that Debra’s husband, 79, was heavily involved in sports betting.

The caller noticed that her husband was moving a lot of money around in the lead-up to her realization.

When confronted, he promised to get the gambling under control and that he could stop whenever he wanted to.

Smiths City liquidation sales across the South over the weekend left shelves stripped of their stock in just one day, as staff are left in the dark about what comes next.

The future of Smiths City remains up in the air with more advice likely by the end of the week.

The 107-year-old retailer went into voluntary administration on Tuesday last week and on Friday announced a nationwide liquidation sale over the weekend.

Seven of the eight stores — Auckland, Christchurch, Greymouth, Oamaru, Alexandra, Gore and Invercargill — reopened to sell remaining stock.

The exception was the Dunedin store, which remained closed.

The Wānaka store closed last month.
