The fate of one of New Zealand’s most recognisable retailers remains uncertain after administrators confirmed Smiths City is entering ‘liquidation sale’ proceedings while they continue talks with potential buyers.

Smiths City Limited, which operates nine stores nationwide and employs more than 110 staff, was placed into voluntary administration on Tuesday.

The company’s administrators, Colin Gower and Diana Matchett of BDO Christchurch, have now completed their initial assessment of the company’s finances and a full stocktake of its stores.

They said discussions were underway with parties interested in taking over parts of the business or its assets, with expressions of interest still being sought.

Bank of Baroda Declares RCom And Anil Ambani Loan Accounts As ‘Fraud’.

Anil Ambani Bank of Baroda Case: In a significant development, Bank of Baroda has declared the loan accounts of Reliance Communications Ltd. (RCom) and its former director, Anil Ambani, as “fraud.”

The bank has informed the stock exchange that this classification relates to loans taken before RCom entered the corporate insolvency resolution process (CIRP). The move adds to the challenges already surrounding the troubled telecom company and its former promoter.

RCom’s Position Under CIRP

RCom has been undergoing insolvency proceedings since June 2019 under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), 2016.

Reliance Dhirubhai Ambani Group Chairman Anil Ambani on Friday said he is being “selectively targeted” in a staggered manner by select banks, a day after Bank of Baroda declared him and the loan accounts of insolvent Reliance Communications Ltd. as “fraud”.
