Students and graduates will soon receive a cut to higher education debts but advocates say the government must do more to make university fees fairer.

Legislation was introduced to parliament on Wednesday to slash HECS debts by 20 per cent and increase income thresholds before minimum repayments kick in.

It is expected to be passed with the support of the opposition in the coming weeks.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese credited the bill as a key reason behind Labor’s victory in the May election.

“Because it resonated with those young Australians in particular, who are looking for intergenerational equity measures, which is what this…

The global health impacts of gambling are much worse than previously thought, according to an international medical journal.

The new report by the Lancet Public Health Commission, which involved experts ranging from gambling studies, public health, global health policy, risk control and regulatory policy, called for stronger regulation.

“Our conclusion is clear: gambling poses a threat to public health, the control of which requires a substantial expansion and tightening of gambling industry regulation,”

the report said.

“Timely response to this growing worldwide threat necessitates concerted action at intergovernmental, national, and regional government levels.”

International regulation for gambling needed, expert says

Analysis conducted by the Parliamentary Library shows that Labor’s much-touted 20% student-debt cut collapses to a mere 7.9% once indexation since their election in 2022 is accounted for. In other words, the impact of the 20% student debt cut is severely diminished by indexation, even after the Government’s changes to indexation by tying it to the lesser of WPI or CPI.

For a student with a $30,000 student debt in 2022 when the Albanese government came to power, after Labor’s indexation tweaks and the promised 20% debt cut, they will end up with a debt of $27,619 – only 7.9% below what they began with.

The Greens have relentlessly pushed the Albanese Government to deliver desperately needed student debt relief since they came…

A Gold Coast businessman has been accused of spending almost $40 million of investors’ money at the casino.

After an ASIC investigation, the Federal Court has appointed receivers to 13 companies run by NDIS property developer David George McWilliams.

The corporate watchdog launched action against the developer and his wife Laura Fullarton after a tip-off by the Queensland Office of Liquor and Gaming that Mr McWilliams placed $39,535,728 worth of bets at Star casinos between October 2022 and February this year.

Over the 17 months, he gambled between $500,000 and $5 million per month.

His gambling losses during the period totalled $3.8 million.

He is also suspected of providing financial services without a licence.

The Albanese government’s 20% cut to student debt is the first bill introduced to the new federal parliament. It is clever politics.

In the government’s first term, the 3 million Australians with a student debt turned high indexation of their loan balances into a major issue. The proposed 20% cut flipped a political negative into a positive ahead of the May 2025 federal election.

The 20% cut legislation, introduced on Wednesday, will also change how student debt is repaid. All the 1.2 million people currently repaying student loans will pay less per year as a result.

How does the cut work, and what does it mean in practice for current students and people with student debt?

Beware the fine print

These changes come with…

The Federal Government has fired the starter’s gun on the business schedule for the new parliament by introducing its legislation to cut student debt.

Labor’s bill seeks to cut 20 per cent off all higher education student debts, with the aim to wipe away more than $16 billion for about three million Australians.

It’s likely to pass with little trouble, as both the Opposition and the Greens have signalled enough initial support for it to get up when it arrives in the Senate.

The government won’t need any help to have it first pass the House of Representatives.

Anthony Albanese said the aim of the bill was to deliver cost of…
