Thousands of cash-strapped families have sought professional help from a charity after running up a £16.2 million mountain of debt in just 12 months.
Staffordshire North and Stoke-on-Trent Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) has blamed people’s personal debt problems on low wages and rising living costs.
It has left many people unable to pay their rent and essential bills.
The CAB’s 2016/17 impact report reveals:
- 3,836 North Staffordshire residents received specialist debt advice from the CAB’s debt advisers after running into personal debt problems;

1,235 people had debts worth £7 million dealt with through a debt relief order;

164 people were helped to go bankrupt – writing off £2.4 million worth of debt.
