The Biden administration has withdrawn its efforts to provide protections to transgender student athletes and forgive student loans.
The Department of Education (DOE) issued a document explaining the withdrawal in the Federal Register on Friday, December 20, which cited the “multiple pending lawsuits” regarding Title IX and gender identity. Because that litigation is ongoing, the DOE said that it would not be issuing a regulation on trans athletes at this time, and that it does “not intend for a final rule to be issued.” The Title IX rule change in question was initially issued in April 2023.
