Governor Janet Mills is calling a student debt relief program she championed a huge success.
The governor’s office says it’s given more than $140 million in debt relief to Mainers in the past three years.
The Maine Legislature approved the program in 2022.
It reimburses up to $2,500 per year through a resident’s state tax return.
That covers a $208 monthly payment.
Governor Mills’ office says under the program relief to student loan borrowers has essentially doubled.
