In Test Valley, 180 residents entered the Breathing Space scheme in 2025, which offers temporary legal protection from creditors.
Also known as the Debt Respite Scheme, the programme provides up to 60 days’ relief from debt collection, interest and charges.

Jack Sporcic, a debt adviser at National Debtline, said: “Behind every Breathing Space application is someone trying to find a way to cope.”
National Debtline is one of the charities authorised to refer individuals to the scheme.
Since its launch in 2021, 567 people in Test Valley have used the service.
